A complicated deal sets up a fitting tribute to Gary Grunau

There’s no “Bronze Gary” or complex water features, but the new pedestrian plaza near Milwaukee’s Deer District honors the late developer and civic leader Gary Grunau in other ways.

The Gary P. Grunau Memorial Plaza, dedicated Monday at West Highland Avenue and North Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, improves an approach to the Highland Avenue pedestrian bridge and Milwaukee Riverwalk. It links the Water Street area with Old World Third Street and the Deer District — a route used by thousands of people headed to events at Fiserv Forum each year.
