HIGHLAND AVENUE BRIDGE

The proposed public plaza on West Highland Avenue, between North Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and the Milwaukee River, will transform a small section of the street into a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly space. The plaza will feature seating, lighting, plantings, pavers, and a striking steel structure reminiscent of a bridge. Enhancing connectivity between the west and east sides of downtown, the space will incorporate pedestrian bridge lighting inspired by the area’s train yard history. Additionally, improvements to West Vliet Street will include traffic calming measures and roadway narrowing to enhance public safety. While primarily a pedestrian-focused area, the design allows for limited vehicle access to serve the Riverfront Plaza building’s loading dock.
